Fountain with Nereids and winged cupid
The Fountain with Nereids, dolphins, and Eros is located on the eastern side of the palace, at the entrance by metal stairs to the park. Previously in the form of a rosette and a three-tiered floral fountain during the times of Duchess Dorota, it was later transformed into a "bundle fountain" in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, and after the introduction of a water supply system, into a chalice fountain. In the same place in the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy-two, Moritz Gottgetreu oversaw the implementation of a new project, especially focusing on the sculptural setting of the fourth fountain before the eastern wing. Its creator was Julius Troschel, a Berliner living in Rome (one thousand eight hundred and six, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three). The sculptural composition, preserved to this day, consisted of four kneeling figures of nereids - daughters of the Greek sea god Nereus, supporting with their hands a bowl with four dolphins and a figure of Eros standing at the top blowing a horn and holding a trident in his right hand. The gushing water flowed from the dolphins' mouths and the horn. The fountain is surrounded by flower lawns.
