Mary's Island

Maria's Island.

Between the Carp Pond and the Bóbr river, there is Maria's stone, marking a resting place and also a viewpoint towards the Upper Park-Kosmos and Dorota's Farm. Today we see directly the Upper Park and the barrier on the Rear Bóbr. The island, or rather the peninsula, was artificially created. The view that spread from here presented, from the left, the dam on the Bóbr, the bridge, behind it Louis Island, the princely mill, and the picturesquely situated sawmill, destroyed in the year one thousand eight hundred ninety-seven due to flooding. The place is dedicated to the granddaughter of Duchess Dorota, Maria Dorota de Castellane, who in Żagań on the third of October, one thousand eight hundred fifty-seven, entered into a marriage with Antoni Radziwiłł, later adjutant to Marshal Piłsudski. The wedding took place in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Post-Augustinian Complex, and the family friend Franz Liszt played the organ. In the depths, on the pedestal, there was a copy of the statue of Diana of Gabii, which could be admired from the surrounding benches. Continuing westward, along the Młynówka Canal, we come across the site of the former Orangery and the Dutch Garden, later called Louis's Garden.
