Gallery of the Good Devil

The "Gallery of the Good Devil" created here is unique worldwide thanks to the Żagań sculptor - Jerzy Kupczyk, who made all the sculptures. He specialized in devilish images. From lime wood, he carved an entire collection. Since the year nineteen ninety, he carved a series of "little devils" according to the tales and legends of the Lubusz Land. Another inspiration was the interesting life of a small post-war town with a remarkable history. The cycle of Żagań devils refers to palace mascarons in its form, although it provides their moody counterbalance. There are various stories about the creation of these beautiful architectural details, here is one of them.

Legend says that the artist was given the challenging task of making mascarons, each of which had to be different. At one point, he had no idea for a new "face". Then he made a pact with the devil in exchange for inspiration. The devil was to show himself to the artist each time revealing a different image. For many years, the devil patiently posed, adopting a new facial expression, until on the last mascaron he showed his true face, causing the artist to fall to his death, terrified from the scaffold.
